Charter Night
a great success.
Guests from many other local Rotary clubs joined us and our District Governor, Harry
Windle (shown above), at our major annual social 'bash', the Charter Night Dinner.
It was as ever a great occasion, providing Pudsey Rotarians with the opportunity to give
their monkey suits an airing and of course renew old Rotarian friendships -- as well as
making some new ones. Our Guest Speaker was Ben Atkinson, the former Chief Auctioneer at
Otley Livestock Market.
District Governor Harry Windle and the Presidents of the Bradford and the Calverley Clubs
are shown above with the Pudsey Club President Fred Beaumont, who here gives his comments
on the night.
"For the Officers of the Club, particularly the Vice President and
President, the annual Charter Night Dinner is without doubt the most important event of
the year.
It is the occasion on which we try to look our best, knowing that we have a
perceptive and usually, in Rotary terms, experienced audience. Things like the speaker
failing to arrive on time, or the soup being cold are the stuff of nightmares . No
problems this year, the guests all turned up and the speakers were in fine form.
Reports from visiting Rotarians and guests were positive and all seemed to enjoy
the occasion. Special guests of the Club were District Governor Harry Windle and the
Presidents of the Bradford and the Calverley Clubs, along with representatives of the
Woodhall Hills Golf Club who gave us the opportunity, earlier in
the year, to raise money for Hope and Homes for Children.
A first for us was the visit of a lady President of a Rotary club at one of our
Charter celebrations. Marjory Austin of the Ilkley Wharfedale Club was the centre of some
attention and may have dented somewhat the 'not in our club' attitude to ladies in
Rotary."
